Notice Your Feelings, Choose Your Response

Emotional intelligence is the ability to notice, understand and manage your own feelings, and to sense what others are feeling. It helps you stay calm when situations become tense, and lets you respond with kindness instead of reacting in anger. When you are aware of your emotions, you make clearer choices and build stronger connections at work, at home, and with friends. A simple way to grow this skill is to pause when a strong feeling arises. Take a slow breath, name the feeling – for example, ‘I am feeling frustrated’ – and then ask yourself what you need right now. Naming the feeling reduces its grip, and choosing a small, helpful action, like asking for help or taking a short walk, turns the moment into a chance to act wisely.

Actionable Takeaway

When you notice a strong feeling today, pause, label it, and write down one small step you can take to respond constructively.
