Spot the Shortcut: Clear Thinking in Everyday Life
Your mind loves shortcuts. It creates mental shortcuts called cognitive biases – simple errors that colour how we see things. A common one is confirmation bias, where we only notice information that agrees with what we already think. This matters because it can keep us stuck in wrong ideas, affect our work, relationships and money choices. The brain prefers quick answers, but quick answers are not always right. By noticing the bias, we give ourselves a chance to correct it. To break the habit, pause before you decide. Ask yourself: what would someone who disagrees say? Try the mental model of inverse thinking – imagine the opposite outcome you want to avoid and work backwards. Seeking a different view widens your picture and leads to better choices.
