Staying Calm in Conflict

When a disagreement pops up, our first instinct is often to argue or walk away. Both reactions can make the problem bigger. Instead, pause for a breath and give yourself a moment to notice what you feel. This simple pause stops the heat from rising and lets you think more clearly. When you feel the tension, label it – say to yourself ‘I am angry’ or ‘I feel upset’. Naming the feeling reduces its power and opens space for listening. Listening means hearing the other person’s words without planning your reply. It shows respect and often reveals the real issue behind the clash. Why does this matter? Calm handling keeps relationships strong and prevents stress from spilling into other areas of life. How to apply it? Choose one small conflict today – a work chat or a family discussion – and practise the pause, label, and listen steps.
