Turn Tension into Talk

Conflict is a signal that something matters to us, not a sign that we’ve failed. When tension rises, we can choose to see it as a doorway rather than a wall. By pausing, breathing, and truly hearing the other person’s story, we shift from defence to curiosity. We all carry assumptions that colour our reactions. Ask yourself what need lies behind the anger, and invite the other person to share theirs. A simple question like, “What would help you feel heard?” can turn a clash into a collaboration. When we approach the moment with openness, the energy shifts, and solutions emerge more naturally, leaving both sides feeling respected.

Actionable Takeaway

Next time a disagreement rises, pause, count to five, then ask the other person one clarifying question.
