SMART Team Heads Home After Nepal Relief

The Malaysian Special Search and Rescue Team (SMART) is set to return to Kuala Lumpur today or tomorrow, ending a three‑month deployment in Nepal. The unit was sent after the 2023 magnitude‑6.9 earthquake that left thousands injured and many roads blocked, joining a UN‑coordinated Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Response (HADR) effort. SMART provided high‑altitude rope rescue, medical triage and debris clearance, working alongside Nepalese authorities and other aid agencies.

The mission highlights Malaysia’s growing expertise in rapid‑response rescue. Trained for jungle, urban and mountainous terrain, SMART has previously assisted in Sabah floods and the 2015 Nepal quake, earning a reputation for technical skill and cultural sensitivity. Their work in Kathmandu restored critical routes to remote villages, saving lives that might otherwise have been lost.

Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan confirmed the imminent return, thanking the team for “exemplary service” and noting the operation as a testament to Malaysia’s commitment to regional solidarity. A low‑key debrief and recognition ceremony will mark the homecoming.

The successful Nepal deployment reinforces Malaysia’s standing as a reliable HADR partner, paving the way for future joint exercises and deeper diplomatic ties with South Asian neighbours.
