Malaysia Fortifies Layang-Layang Outpost

Kuala Pilah officials have announced a major upgrade of defence readiness on Pulau Layang‑Layang, a tiny but strategic island in the South China Sea. New radar installations and reinforced base facilities will boost surveillance and allow faster response to any incursions. The upgrades also include better living quarters for troops, signalling a long‑term commitment to a permanent presence. Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin framed the move as essential to protect Malaysia’s sovereign waters and airspace amid a spate of overlapping claims in the region.
