Miri Floods Prompt Urgent Action from Agencies

Heavy rain on the night of 10 January caused flash floods to sweep through low-lying neighbourhoods of Miri, leaving roads submerged and several homes water-logged. In response, the Miri City Council, the Department of Irrigation and Drainage and the Public Works Department have been instructed to mobilise resources, clear blockages and restore drainage systems without delay. Officials stress that swift coordination is essential to prevent further damage and protect residents and ensure essential services remain functional as the monsoon season approaches.

Flash flooding is not new to Sarawak, but the intensity of the recent downpours overwhelmed older drainage networks that have struggled with rapid urban expansion. Past incidents in 2015 and 2017 highlighted similar gaps, prompting calls for upgraded infrastructure. This latest event therefore revives long-standing concerns about the city's preparedness for extreme weather.

The flooding disrupted daily life, cutting off access to schools, markets and health clinics, and forced several families to evacuate to temporary shelters. Economic activity stalled as businesses could not operate, while the risk of water-borne diseases rose. Prompt remedial action therefore protects public health, sustains livelihoods and reassures investors in the region.
