Penang’s tourism board is buzzing with optimism as forecasts show the state welcoming around eight million visitors in 2026 – a clear step up from last year’s figures. The uptick is driven by new heritage routes, upgraded beach facilities and a lively food festival calendar that’s catching the eye of travellers from China, India and the Middle East. Operators are already gearing up for the influx, confident the island’s charm will keep the momentum going.

The projection follows a steady recovery after the pandemic, when visitor numbers dipped sharply. In 2023 Penang recorded just over five million arrivals, and targeted marketing campaigns, together with the recent launch of the “Heritage on Wheels” tour, have helped rebuild confidence among international tourists.

The surge means more jobs, higher revenues for hotels, street vendors and transport services, and a stronger contribution to the state’s GDP.
